Improved knowledge management practices can strengthen enterprise innovation. But where does knowledge management start?
Improved knowledge management practices offer the kind of innovation improvements that form the core of every strong enterprise. But what is knowledge management (KM) and how can a business identify its needs and capacities?
As part of its ongoing series providing business intelligence and experienced China market expertise, Z. H. TANK spoke at length with Dr. Wu Qinghai, founder of Siemens KM in China and a pioneer in knowledge management, the system by which all enterprise vital knowledge is used to achieve advanced business objectives and efficiencies.
Beginning with an overview of the two decade history of knowledge management, Dr. Wu confronted the reasons many are "puzzled" by the different knowledge management practices, including crystallization, codification, capitalization and personalization. Later in his address, Wu broke down the specifics of these modes. For example, he deconstructed the "management lattice" structure of "crystallization” scenario-based knowledge management.
In a core, comprehensive case study, Dr. Wu examined the implementation of the "3i program." Standing for "ideas, impulses and initiative," 3i is a company wide approach to encourage, implement and reward the ideas, innovations and initiatives of employees.
Dr. Wu looked at the 3i program's Business Application Re-engineering (BAR), the dual IT system and business challenges and the five phases: Design, define, develop, deploy, go-live, and operate. The case study then examined the overall results of the 3i knowledge management system improvements, which included a quadrupling of Additional Business Value (ABV) and a 2,400% increase in the average idea number per man-year.
Finally, during a 10-minute Q&A session, Dr. Wu addressed the subjects of Knowledge Auditing process, KM implications for start-up businesses, the alignment of KM with corporate values, innovation, relationships and change management, as well as in what dimensions the 3i Officers may get their performance reviewed and incentivized.
