China full steam ahead with largest nuclear project

Construction of the Shidaowan nuclear power plant will be developed by China Huaneng Group’s Shandong-based subsidiary has begun.

It was slated to commence in 2011, but was postponed following Japan’s Fukushima nuclear reactor disaster.

The $480 million high temperature gas-cooled nuclear reactor power unit with electricity of 200 MW will be set up during the first stage of project construction. It is expected that the project will start generating power by 2017.

The Shidaowan nuclear power base is the largest in China in terms of investment and power-generating capacity, said Zhang Aijun, a senior official at the Shandong-based subsidiary.

China’s installed capacity will hit 24 gigawatts (GW) by 2015, accounting for 10 percent of the world’s total, said Zhang Huazhu, chairman of the China Nuclear Energy Association. Reported by Proactive Investors 4 hours ago.
