China Mobile will perform a $4.4bn 4G upgrade to its network so its 715m customers will finally have the opportunity to own a fully working iPhone.
The world's largest mobile operator has been valued at £147bn, but its slowing net profit, rising 2.7 per cent or £13.8bn last year, has been blamed on its failure to offer iPhone contracts to its customers. Although 10m China Mobile customers already own an Apple handset, they do not work properly on the TD-SCDMA 3G technology developed by the Chinese to local standards.
The company's main rivals, China Unicom and China Telecom, already use internationally recognised networks which means they can offer iPhones. Many of their customers use 3G, while the majority of China Mobile customers still use 2G.
The company will spend a total of £20.2bn on its infrastructure in the coming year. Reported by Mobile Marketing 7 hours ago.
