Boston Harbor Auctions' Fall Auction is offering over 300 lots of nautical antiques, ship models, decorative accessories and furniture on November 10th, 2012 at 11 am. Like previous auctions they have hosted, there will be several important lots of nautical history sold including late 19th century and early 20th century pieces. Of note is a pair of dead eyes taken from the schooner yacht "America;" the first yacht to race for what would be the America's Cup on August 22, 1851. The pair of deadeyes were recovered by J. Linton “Bunny” Rigg, a well-known yachtsman in Corinthian circles and founder of the Out Island Regatta in the Bahamas.
A pennant from the Royal Ulster Yacht Club will be auctioned. The pennant dates to somewhere between 1895 - 1899 and was the Club that sponsored Sir Thomas Lipton's challenges for the America's Cup. The pennant is over 15 feet long and over 9 feet wide and would have flown on the top mast of either the Cup challenger "Shamrock" or Sir Lipton's private steam yacht, "Erin."
A silver trophy from a 1903 trial race sponsored by the New York Yacht Club![ext]()
and the Eastern Yacht Club from New London, CT to Newport RI. As is engraved on the cup, the trophy was presented by Cornelius Vanderbilt, Rear Commodore of the New York Yacht Club to the "Valmore," owned by WIlliam Hale Thompson, (1869 - 1944), who, 12 years after this race became Mayor of Chicago and ranks among the most unethical mayors in American history most notably due to his strong ties to Al Capone.
Other items include signal cannons, a 19th century figurehead of a Roman Slave, yacht club china from various late 1800/early 1900 yachts, prints, paintings, ship models, a bust of JFK, ship nameboards, other ephemera and gentleman's antiques.
There are over 300 lots of nautical antiques to bid on as well as other decorative arts in the November 10th auction. Auction begins at 11 am.
