*Tacitly acknowledging the withdrawal of its troops from Depsang Valley in Ladakh, China today said the "stand off incident" with India was resolved through "fruitful consultations", keeping the larger interests of bilateral relations in mind.*

"Following the stand off incident at the border area, China and India with the larger interests of bilateral relations in mind have taken a cooperative and constructive attitude," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said.

The two sides exercised restraint and properly handled the incident through relevant mechanisms, diplomatic channels and border meetings, she said.

In her first comments after the decision of the two countries to withdraw troops from the Daulat Beg Oldi (DBO) area after a 20-day stand off, Hua said, "As far as I know relevant consultations have been fruitful".

"We believe that maintaining peace and tranquillity in the border areas serve the common interests of the two sides. China is ready to join hands with the Indian side to seek a mutually acceptable and fair solution to the border question at an early date", she said.

Pressed for more details on the settlement, including dismantling of tents erected by the PLA, Hua said, "I need to follow closely the latest information".

"As I said before the two sides bear in mind the larger interests of bilateral relations," she said.

The two sides have taken a constructive and cooperative attitude and have maintained communication and consultation and made positive progress, Hua said.
"I will share with you relevant information if I get the latest information," she said.

Asked whether the Chinese troops moved back from their position, when did that happen and how far they withdrew, she replied, "I have said the two sides have been constructive and cooperative and have been maintaining communications through relevant mechanism in the border regions".

"Relevant consultations have made positive progress. I know you are very concerned about this and I must follow the information to tell you the correct information", Hua said.

"I believe the Chinese and Indian sides should maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas and work for the smooth development of bilateral relations", she said. Reported by Deccan Herald 45 minutes ago.

EU and China PMI Slide Filed under: Global Economy, Economy

Has a drop in China's Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) been hurt by the European Union's recession, or has the EU recession been hurt by a drop in exports to China? No one knows, but purchasing activity in both areas has been badly damaged. Few nations around the world have escaped the trend, except maybe the United States. And that in and of itself is a sign the global economy is in the midst of what could be a very sharp slowing or even contraction. It may not be 2007 all over again, but the situation could be close.

The carefully followed HSBC services PMI for China dropped to 51.1 in April, down from 54.3 in March. A level below 50 represents a contraction. Several media outlets pointed out that China's PMI in April was a 20-month low. China and its regional governments have been accused of padding numbers in the past, so the manufacturing economy in the People's Republic could have hit a period when production is shrinking.

The figures out of Europe were worse, particularly because the mighty economy of Germany is in trouble. According to the Markit Eurozone Composite PMI:

At 46.9 in April, up from March's four-month low of 46.5, the final Markit Eurozone PMI Composite Output Index was slightly above its earlier flash estimate of 46.5.

Overall output has now declined throughout the past 15 months, although the easing in the rate of
decline signalled by the headline index was the first since January. Eurozone manufacturing production and service sector business activity both contracted at similarly marked rates in April.

Output contracted across the four largest euro nations. Ongoing steep downturns were signalled in Spain, France and Italy, although rates of decline eased in the latter two. Germany also slipped back into contraction for the first time since November 2012, with renewed declines signalled by manufacturers and service providers alike. Growth strengthened in Ireland, as a solid upturn in the service sector offset weakness at manufacturers.

Analysts probably expected the trouble in France, Italy and Spain. However, German activity finally has become eroded, by the slack economies of its neighbors and perhaps due to sluggishness of demand in its large trade partners — the United States, China and Japan.

If there is any hope that Germany's situation might improve, it is the United States, where the economy has shown a level of strength for the past several months. Some experts expected federal government spending and higher tax rates might hammer an American recovery. There are some modest signs that is true, but the threats have not destroyed the American recovery, though they could still cripple it.

If PMI is a fair barometer of overall trends in gross domestic product, then the trouble has spread worldwide.

China's Baidu expands online video business with $370 million acquisition

China's largest search engine Baidu is getting closer to becoming the country's largest online video provider with a new US$370 million acquisition.

Baidu is spending the money to buy the online video business of PPS, a popular video sharing company in China, it said Tuesday. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of this year.

Following the acquisition, the online video business of PPS will be merged into Baidu's own video platform, known as iQiyi. The search giant claims this will turn iQiyi into China's largest online video platform by number of mobile users and video viewing time.

The acquisition by Baidu points to further consolidation of China's online video sector. Last year, two of the country's leading video sites, Youku and Tudou, joined forces in a major merger. The companies re-branded themselves as Youku Tudou.
